How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

Customized Relaxation
Sedation dentistry can customize the level of your relaxation (light, moderate, or deep). It all depends on your needs. Nitrous oxide is for light relaxation and can be used for most procedures. Oral sedation is used for light to moderate sedation and is an excellent choice for those who experience dental anxiety. Deep sedation can help those with severe dental phobia to get the treatment they need and remain anxiety-free.

Little Memory of the Procedure
For some, the sights, smells, and sounds of the dental office are anxiety-inducing. With sedation dentistry, you will have very little, if any, memory of your procedure. When using inhalation or oral sedation, you will be conscious and able to respond to our dental team, but completely relaxed. You will sleep through your treatment with IV sedation. No matter which form of sedation you use, when your treatment is complete, it will seem as though just a few minutes have passed.

Get More Work Done
One of the real benefits of sedation dentistry is it allows Dr. Goldtrap to perform multiple procedures in one visit! If you need complex dental treatment, you won’t need to make repeated dental visits to the office. We want you to be able to have the dental treatment you need for a healthy and beautiful smile. For those with dental fear, sedation dentistry is a real time saver!

FAQs About Sedation Dentistry

  • Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes, sedation dentistry is safe. Dr. Goldtrap will carefully analyze your overall health and medical history before recommending any form of sedation.

During your treatment, Dr. Goldtrap and his team monitor you closely to ensure a safe and comfortable procedure. We customize the dosage of nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation to your individual needs. Even IV sedation is quickly reversible if necessary.

  • How fast does sedation work?
It may take 30 to 45 minutes before you begin to feel the effects of oral sedation. For those whose dental anxiety is so severe that just getting themselves to come through our office door is a challenge, oral sedation can be taken at home before your visit. You’ll feel relaxed even before you get to our office! Of course, you would need to make arrangements to have someone else drive you to your appointment and take you home.

IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream, so the effects are almost instantaneous. This type of sedation is used only under close professional supervision. You will be conscious after your treatment, but because it takes the medication a few hours to completely leave the system, you will need someone to drive you home.

  • Am I a Good Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is perfect for you if you want to say “goodbye” to:

    • Needles
    • Not being in control
    • Excessive appointments
    • Overall stress and discomfort

    Why is sedation important?

Too many people let their fear of the dentist keep them from receiving the preventative dental care they need. This is a legitimate concern that affects more people than you might think. And while many people experience it to different degrees, it only becomes a problem when it starts interfering with your dental health and wellness.
